What Wonderful Attributes Do You See In Yourself?

Hi!

Wait!  Before you step into the, “I don’t want to sound arrogant,” vibe; stop!!  Just try it.  Think about the things you like about you.  Name your attributes that fit into the ‘wonderful’ category.

If you are hesitant; I will start.  For instance; I like my eyes.  They are pretty.

Now, tell me!  Does that sound like conceit?  Yes?  But; I am not.  Conceit means,  “accessibly proud of oneself, vain.”  I am not overly fixated on my eyes.  I just like the way my long eyelashes look when I put mascara on them.  Just one glimpse or two.  That is all.  Obsession is not in the picture.

Are you wondering where these thoughts are coming from?  Yes?  Good!  Let’s talk about it.

There was a time, not long ago, when I looked in the mirror; I would always see ugly.  Recently, those thoughts have not been as frequent.  But; I still do not like taking pictures; and have problems with my slim legs.

A reminder of self-conscious feelings came out last year, on Christmas Day.

One of the young ladies in MAC (My Accountability Crew); stopped by my house with a gift from Nordstrom.  She had bought me a pair of ankle boots for Christmas.  I was happy to receive the gift.  But, when I opened it; the thought of how pencil stick legs would look in the boots overshadowed my noticing how pretty the boots were.  That made me realize, I had negative thoughts about my legs.

Dwelling on what you dislike about yourself causes hindrances.

That is why, it is good to point out your wonderful attributes.  Just do not become self-absorbed.  Make sure you keep a happy medium.  Even though, we all may have negative thoughts about ourselves at times; we can use these, sometimes true findings to see opportunities for improvements.  Keep in mind, “Positivity always wins over negativity!”

Liking my eyes is a major step towards the land of positivity for me.  But; my eyes and legs do not quite fit into the class of attributes.

So let’s explore inward characteristics that drive outward actions.

Someone I know loves her ability to help people do their best.  Not that she does those things in and of herself.  She is totally aware that her gift of helps and passion to see others succeed come from God.  He gets all the credit and the glory.  Yet; she loves it that they are attributes God has given to her.  He has placed in her the desire to help people reach their full potential.

Don’t you think that is a wonderful attribute?  Yes?  So; what about you?  What wonderful attributes do you have?   Please, DO NOT say that you do not have any.  That, my friend, just might be the result of negativity’s stronghold, or it is simply false modesty.

Also, do not make a four page list of your marvelousness.  That is a bit over the top.  We do not want to spill over into the, “arrogance,” category.  Let’s keep it balanced.  Also; please, do not migrate to beating yourself down.  That is not good either.

Okay!  Let’s get back on the subject.  What happens during days that give you glimpses of your wonderful attributes?  Think about it.  Your terrific ways have the ability to grab your attention at any given time; if you let them.

Here is an example:

One day; as I talked on the phone with a mentee; she started naming her flaws; one after the other.  Then she stressed how she plans to improve.   I said, “You should be careful about what you say about yourself.  Life and death is in the power of the tongue.  Rather than saying, ‘I have no discipline;’ you can say, ‘I plan to improve in the area of discipline.’  Seeing your attributes that are ripe for enhancements is a good thing.  It is all in the, ‘SEEING!’”

Sometimes we overly emphasize on the negative aspects about ourselves.  That causes us to not see our value.  There was a time when I was like that.  I would find fault in almost everything I did or said.

I looked at my need to do things in an excellent way as doing too much.  I saw my wish to learn as ridiculous.  Rather than feeling good about accomplishments at work; or in ministry; I stayed dissatisfied.

Constantly finding fault in yourself will take precedence over seeing good.

For instance; I viewed my loving to learn as a result of me dropping out of college when I was 17; and waiting until I was 30 to go back.  I  was in such conflict with myself; so busy beating myself down; until I did not realize that loving to learn is a good thing.  But Something wonderful happened on the first day of this year.

That morning; I had an epiphany.  As I was playing, “Wordscape,” on my iPhone; I looked up the definition of a new word.  It was so rewarding.  Then; I read an article one of my old professors shared on Facebook.

I noticed how; she integrated  interesting words in her post.  As I looked up the definition to one of those intellect grabbing words, I remembered how much I love words.   I do not love learning new words, just so I will know more than others.  I simply love learning the meanings of new words.

When that divine revelation came into my spirit; it felt good.  I thought; “I love new words.  Wow!  That is a great attribute.”

But, do self-revelations of your attributes have to come through others?

My friend, I really don’t think so.  At least, not always.  Did you notice; the above two discoveries did not come from the opinions of others?  God placed them in my spirit.

It is fun to have a relationship with The Lord.  It is especially fun to KNOW that you have a relationship with the Lord.  Wow!  Those are two more wonderful attributes.  They cause you to seek to uncover more.

Will you do me a favor and go on a journey with me for the next 40 days?

I am on a quest to drop negativity, and find the positive joyous attributes about Rochelle.  I know it is going to take letting go of some old familiar ways, and picking up new ones.

Starting TODAY, I am going to pray to realize wondrous things about me.  Each day, for 40 days, I will write them in a journal or notebook.  Will you join me?

It will be fun and liberating.  If you would like; start sharing some of your wonderful attributes, qualities, looks, etc., in this post’s comments.  If some are too private to share; just list what you want openly, and make sure you keep up your personal log.  I’ll share too.  Okay?  Okay!!  Who is with me?  You are?  Great!  Let’s do this!!
